Daily Fantasy Baseball Diamonds: 4/14/14
Monday marks the usual abbreviated MLB schedule meaning strong situational match ups are harder to find in daily fantasy baseball. Today, I’ll be counting on a trio of young players priced at $3,000 or lower to contribute points, allowing me to start a top starting pitcher and a pair of stars expected to have huge days given their respective match ups. After a weekend scouting minor league baseball players, it’s time to win a little gas money. Monday through Friday, I’ll research the day’s best daily fantasy baseball bargains, so readers can load the lineup with stars. Save time and make money with our picks.
Devin Mesoraco, C, Cincinnati Reds
In his career, Mesoraco has been best at home versus LHP. With a 162 wRC+, he’s a no brainer play for $2,500 against an opposing pitcher (Wandy Rodriguez) whose xFIP was 3.91 on the road last season. His bargain basement price allows me to start his battery-mate today. In 2013, Homer Bailey‘s 2.98 xFIP at home was more than a half run better than any other pitcher in daily fantasy baseball today.
Chris Owings, SS, Arizona Diamondbacks
Yes, it’s a small sample size, but Owings has a 168 wRC+ at home in his career. Plus, the shortstop has been stealing bases with four in 15 games. On paper, Zack Wheeler is a difficult match up, but the right-hander has a career 3.92 xFIP on the road. After Owings, the best shortstop plays are the expensive ones. I’d rather save $1,500 or so and spend it on Josh Donaldson who is the best third base play today.
Domonic Brown, OF, Philadelphia Phillies
At $3,000, Brown is an excellent play at home against the home run prone Ervin Santana. Santana posted a 3.75 xFIP on the road in 2013, but Philadelphia is one of the best parks in baseball to hit in. Plus, Brown had a 165 wRC+ at home in 2013. In daily fantasy baseball, he’s a top outfield bargain on a day when expensive stars present dominate the day’s match ups.
Ryan Howard, 1B, Philadelphia Phillies
Get used to seeing Ryan Howard’s name on this list when facing a right-handed starter at home. In his career, he has a wRC+ of 163, meaning he’s 63% better than a league average hitter in that situation. Against Ervin Santana, I like Howard’s chances of running into a fastball today.
No Rangers In Daily Fantasy Baseball Today
With Roenis Elias on the mound, I expected to start a lineup full of Rangers. And while the match ups were okay, better situational options were out there — although Alex Rios is tempting. Many owners will play a plethora of Texas players today, making this a make or break game for most daily fantasy players today.
