Daily Fantasy Baseball Diamonds: 5/19/14
Finding daily fantasy baseball diamonds on a day with so few MLB games is a daunting task. When many owners are on the same guys, it’s difficult to select players outside of the “Captain Obvious” plays. Today, we’ll look at a discounted starting pitcher and multiple infielders worth starting today due to strong situational match ups. Monday through Friday, ROTOscouting brings readers bargain basement recommendations so owners can round out rosters with stars.
Garrett Richards, P, Los Angeles Angels ($7,200)
Richards is having a breakout season for the Angels making me wonder why he’s so undervalued against a weak hitting Astros team? Houston hits poorly against right-handed pitchers and on the road, while striking out in bunches. In daily fantasy baseball, I prefer Richards to Stephen Strasburg today, even though Cincinnati limps into today’s action without Joey Votto.
Mike Moustakas, 3B, Kansas City Royals ($2,600)
The Royals third baseman has had a miserable season. Today, however, he faces a pitcher (Scott Carroll) who has allowed 24 hits in 13 1/3 innings pitched against left-handed hitters. Additionally, the White Sox fill in has struck out one RHH all season. Meanwhile, Moustakas is best at home where he’s produced right around the league average over the course of his career. In daily fantasy baseball. today’s third base crop is terrible, so might as well pick the worst pitcher and go with it.
Eric Hosmer, 1B, Kansas City Royals ($2,700)
Like Moustakas, picking Hosmer is more of an opportunity play. In his career, Hosmer is stronger against right-handed pitchers and the Royals first baseman should treat Carroll like a round of batting practice. Plus, the White Sox catchers aren’t exactly gunners behind the plate, so Hosmer may be able to add a stolen base to go with a couple of base knocks today in daily fantasy baseball.
Ian Desmond, SS, Washington Nationals ($2,900)
Desmond faces Mike Leake today. The right-hander is in the midst of a strong start, but Desmond has mashed at home versus RHP. With a wRC+ 52% better than the league average in 2013 and 40% better this season, a promotion to the cleanup spot will lead to run producing opportunities.
Stars Across The Outfield In Daily Fantasy Baseball
Today’s daily fantasy lineup was so cheap, my outfield consists of Justin Upton, Mike Trout and Carlos Gomez. With Richards in tow, the big money ace just wasn’t necessary today.
