Should Fantasy Owners Cash In On Chris Sale And Other Questions
A number of subscribers are not shy about asking questions and I do my best to answer all of them….
Do you think Chicago should at least entertain offers for Sale? I’d imagine even with his size and durability concerns, ones that really haven’t manifested yet, he’d still get a very good haul. Maybe a Profar package, or is that reaching too much for Williams and Hahn?
At present, Sale is one of the most valuable commodities in all of baseball. However, I’m not sure the Rangers are a good fit for his services. Derek Holland, Matt Harrison and Martin Perez are all lefties. The first two have already proven to be quality Major Leaguers while Perez is showing signs of maturity. Why trade your best chip to strengthen a present strength?
For me, Profar is only dealt in a package for Giancarlo Stanton or other young, controllable outfield slugger. They need to fill holes in the outfield before doing anything else IMO. David Murphy and Craig Gentry are quality pieces, but an outfield of Nelson Cruz, Leonys Martin and Giancarlo Stanton with Murphy/Gentry as role players would be ideal on a championship ball club.
In an ottoneu points league, I have a $50 Strasburg and am looking to sell to the 4th place team who is less than 600 out of first. His pitching is coming it an 4.9 PPG and he needs to make a push in order to stay in the hunt. He asked me about Strasburg for Kyle Zimmer at $2 and Wilmer Flores at $3. I like both players, but feel I could pick up something comparable on the FA market for the same prices, if not cheaper.
This owner tried to say that at $52 Strasburg is not a keeper and he can’t give up a huge piece because of that. However, even if this team could not keep him, I feel pretty confident that he would be able to get a Flores, Zimmer type return for him at seasons end (at the very least I would give him those players for Strasburg’s services next year).
In two years of Ottoneu, I’ve yet to see a $50 pitcher. In the Experts League, I own Clayton Kershaw at $36 and he’s right on the hairy edge of being worth the budget. The primary reason I keep him is because I also own a $3 Jeff Samardzija and $5 Lance Lynn, among others. The average cost of my pitching staff allows me to keep Kershaw.
One thing owners do not understand is just how quickly pitcher value craters when the numbers aren’t truly elite. Strasburg is pushing strong, but not elite numbers. If you ran a value calculator right now, Strasburg might be worth half of Kershaw in terms of dollars.
Plus, Strasburg has durability working against him. The only pitchers I’m willing to pay big money for in Ottoneu are guys I’m confident will pitch 200 innings or more. I can’t say that about Strasburg.
You are correct in thinking prospects similar to Kyle Zimmer and Wilmer Flores will be available via auction, but view Strasburg as a rental, period.
If my most pertinent categories in roto are RBI and OBP, should I be giving daily starts to Altuve, Kendrick, or Prado at 2B? Also I’ve been using the lefty/righty splits matchup style all year and it’s working well. Trying to decide if I’m ready to give up a career of Yelich or Castellanos for Cano (I’m trying other offers to the guy first).
Both Howie Kendrick and Jose Altuve are having strong years. I know Cano is the pie in the sky scenario (I made a deadline deal for him in Ottoneu Experts in 2012), but do you have a position where an upgrade would make an even bigger difference? In essence, you would be trading Castellanos or Yelich for the difference between Cano and Kendrick for 50 games. Cano is projected for a .363 OBP and 32 RBI the rest of the way. Kendrick is projected for .323 and 22 RBI.
If you only had Prado at the position, I’d say do it. But with Altuve, Kendrick, I’d stand pat.
