Triple digit velocity is rare. In six seasons at the ballpark, only one pitcher has hit triple digits. Not a household name, former Dodgers and Braves farmhand Luis Vasquez’s top fastballstouched 100 mph several times as a member of the Chattanooga Lookouts in 2012. An elite, 80 grade fastball is clocked at 97 MPH or higher. And while the Aroldis Chapman’s of the world make velocity look easy, few pitchers are able to push triple digits with top fastballs.
After racking up over 100 stolen bases in 2012 and posting an OBP above .400 in 2013, expectations were high for Delino Deshields coming into the season. Unfortunately, a .236/.340/.341 triple slash line has fallen short of expectations in Double-A Corpus Christi. With a drop in power production and increased strikeout rate, is this season an indication of things to come for the Houston Astros farmhand? Or, will he adjust to the level similar to his time in Lexington?
Baseball fans caught a rare glimpse into the behind-the-scenes world of front office trade talks after the Houston Astros leak. The Astros saw months of confidential communications leaked online, including inquiries from this past off-season and the week leading up to the trade deadline last season. Houston acknowledged the incident, though this sort of mess could have easily happened to each and every one of the other MLB teams. While some question who was responsible and how it happened, an equally important question is how it didn’t happen earlier.
The MLB Futures Game 2014 is approaching and rosters were released yesterday. Fortunately, ROTOscouting has recent scouting reports on four, World Team prospects in the game. In addition to those reports, we have notes and scouting information from our writers featured on other sites including Bullpen Banter and FanGraphs. Overall, the rosters boast an impressive collection of talent. From Cubs Kris Bryant to Yankees Luis Severino, all 30 MLB organizations are well represented. Full scouting reports were left as links. Blurbs where players were mentioned have been pulled as quotes.
Is Domingo Santana the next man up in Houston? Our own Mike Newman thinks so, including Santana as a honorable mention in his 6/10 edition of MLB Depth Chart Dynamos. Having promoted top prospects George Springer and Jonathan Singleton this season, the Houston Astros will look to the player-to-be-named later in the Hunter Pence deal to fill a gaping hole in left field. Santana has exceeded expectations against advanced competition, slashing .287/.366/.487 and blasting 10 home runs — especially impressive for the third youngest player in the Pacific Coast League. A fringe top-100 prospect entering the season, is the young Dominican a long term answer for the Houston in outfield?
ROTOscouting offers our readers a place to view raw notes on players we do not profile in depth with bona fide baseball scouting reports. Rather than just being a vehicle for more dissemination of our content, YOUscout is also open to the public. We hope to build a crowd sourced scouting database that can continually be referenced as players progress through the minors and into the major leagues.
Scouting an organization’s baseball prospects gives ROTOscouting an edge. When evaluating an MLB depth chart for the next wave of prospects ready to break through, we rely on baseball scouting to help identify players ready to fill a Major League team’s most pressing need. An example of this is the Cardinals outfield. Readers want Oscar Taveras to be handed the center field job, but ROTOscouting scouted Randal Grichuk as a better up the middle defender. When the call up was made, it was Grichuk, not Taveras who received the first call. Check out our picks for players likely to be first to the show.
As the Super Two deadline passes, top prospects have one less obstacle to the Show. And as the quality of available pitchers on the fantasy market dwindles, spending remaining FAAB dollars on speculative plays becomes vital. So even though arms profiled in FAAB Fantasy Baseball Targets may need an injury or ineffectiveness to break into a major league rotation, astute fantasy owners will be ahead of the curve. This week features a top prospect making his debut tonight, a trio of top-100 prospects on the verge of graduating to MLB, and a pitcher producing historic numbers who’s still available in most fantasy leagues. Bid recommendations are based on a $100 FAAB budget. Players listed are available in the majority of leagues across the three major fantasy platforms.
A year ago, Astros prospect Jonathan Singleton was in the dog house. Between a suspension for pot and out of shape return where he struck out 30.3% of the time, the first baseman hit rock bottom. Rated no lower than 27th on any major prospect list entering 2013, he fell out of the top-50, ranking as low as 82. Of course a top-100 ranking still speaks to a quality prospect, but the same writers ripping him for signing a “team friendly” contract before ever seeing a big league pitch are the ones ripping him for under performing. Pick a side and stick with it!
Scouting reports are the lifeblood of ROTOscouting. We offer a plethora of material at ROTOscouting, but our lifeblood is the constant stream of scouting reports. Our authors travel to games and use their baseball knowledge and experience to project these top prospects into the future. We evaluate their tools and their level of refinement to produce grades along with our prose.
